How to check the Windows event logs

Overview

Windows logs various events into its event logs. The event logs can be viewed with the eventvwr.exe tool which is supplied with Windows.

To start eventvwr.exe, click the taskbar's Start button, then click Run (or simply press Windows+R). Either of these will pop up a dialog: just type in eventvwr and click OK.

(Some versions of Windows — e.g., Windows Vista — may pop up a security dialog to check that you really want to run the program.) Once the event viewer has started is will look similar to this:

In the above screenshot some manifest-related entries can be seen as well as the details of the selected entry.
